This exhibition tells the story of Florence Nightingale and her legacy in 199 objects, people and places. We invite you to nominate the 200th object, person or place to be included in our exhibition. Choose your favourite from the following four exhibits.
Elizabeth Arden, 1881-1966
Canadian business woman and founder of beauty brand Elizabeth Arden, was actually born Florence Nightingale Graham. Florence was originally a boy’s name but due to Nightingale’s fame, quickly became a girl’s name.
Mr. Bismarck
Nightingale also gave fame to the term “cat lady”. She said “cats possess more feelings and empathy than human beings”. Throughout her life she owned 60 cats, probably 17 at once.

Jenny Lind, 1820-1887
Jenny Lind was a Swedish opera singer who achieved international fame in the mid-19th century. She was known as the “Swedish Nightingale”. She donated money from her performances to Florence Nightingale’s Nursing Fund.
Nanjing Nightingale Nursing College, 2015
In 2015, a partnership between the Florence Nightingale Faculty of Nursing, Midwifery & Palliative Care at King’s College London and the Nanjing Health School in China was established. The aim is to upskill the Nanjing healthcare workforce and establish a new nursing college.
