---
This object is dated 24 February 1855 and depicts the British military hospital at Scutari and illustrates the wounded soldier being cared for and treated by female nurses. These nurses were under the authority of Florence Nightingale as she arrived at Scutari hospital in November 1854. This print emphasises the work of the nurses and the physical impact of the war and how Nightingale’s nurses provided appropriate medical care to the wounded. The nurses are depicted as providing clean linen, bedding and medicine to the solider, which was one measure that revolutionised Nightingale’s work in Scutari and the Crimean War.
The maker and designer of this print was a lithographic artist, painter, mapmaker and publisher, Thomas Packer (1824-1896), who specialised in bird's eye views of “maps of battles and theatres of war” [Ref1]. The manufacturer was under the partnership Stannard & Dixon, which was a partnership between William Thomas Stannard and Francis Dixon, and they manufactured and published a variety of prints and maps [Ref2].
