About this objectA scale model of Florence Nightingale's Crimean War carriage. It is made with an oil-cloth roof, wooden body and metal wheels.
The model was commissioned by the Florence Nightingale biographer Cecil Woodham-Smith and created by Denham Film Studios. It was made for her book launch in 1950 and was displayed in the shop window of Harrods department store alongside other objects related to the Crimean War.
In 1954 the model travelled to Istanbul, Turkey for a special centenary exhibition on the Crimean War. Once it returned to England Cecil Woodham-Smith donated it to the Nightingale Training School, where it was also displayed in a centenary exhibition.
Though based in Constantinople, Nightingale travelled the 300-mile journey to the Crimea three times over the course of the war, coming close to death on her first visit having caught Crimean Fever. She was given the carriage on her third visit after being involved in a mule cart crash.
