Florence Nightingale and Italy
Two centuries of the Art of Science and Nursing
On the occasion of 12 May 2020, Nightingale’s bicentenary, FNOPI will be organising numerous initiatives to make the city of Florence “The home of world nursing”. Among these is a conference, “Florence Nightingale and Italy – Two centuries of the Art and Science of Nursing.”
Throughout the city of her birth we will be organising numerous initiatives in squares and busy public places, including handing out information and advising and answering questions on the main issues of public health to increase not only assistance but also (and above all) prevention. The city of Florence will be, for one day, the House of Nurses, in the name of Florence Nightingale.
Through the involvement of academics, historians, and health professionals we intend to outline the particular relationship established by Nightingale throughout our Country, our institutions, and the medical structures of the time.
Thanks to recent research carried out in international archives, including London, we will be able to reveal novelties about these topics, through original letters and documents.
On May 12, at the same time as the conference, in the nearby Piazza della Ss. Annunziata, there will be a large gazebo for initiatives aimed at citizenship.
Finally, at Palazzo Vecchio, a reception point will be set up for philatelic annulment, since a commemorative stamp will be issued.
