Born in Jamaica, Mary Seacole set up her own hospital in Kingston Town to care for the sick and wounded British soldiers. In 1854, when the Crimean war broke out in Eastern Europe, British soldiers joined the French and Turkish to battle against the Russians. Mary decided to go to the Crimea to help. When the war ended, she returned to England. Her book about her adventures and travels, Wonderful Adventures of Mrs Seacole in Many Lands, became a bestseller.

This book is part of the Hopscotch Histories series. Each page is made up of illustrations, roughly about two thirds of the space available, with the remainder being large format text. The illustrations are colourful and engaging and can be used as a starting point for conversations around many topics, such as food, hygiene, health, care and so on.

It is a lovely read for any child, and, told in under 400 words, it is perfect for children who are building up their reading confidence.
