The Nightingale Pledge was adapted from the Hippocratic Oath by Lystra E. Gretter, director of the Farrand Training School of the Harper Hospital in Detroit, USA. Composed and named in honour of Florence Nightingale, the Pledge was first taken by the graduates of the Farrand Training School on April 25 1893. Since then, the pledge has become the most widely accepted oath in the nursing profession.
