Metal and enamel pin badge featuring an image of Mary Seacole and ‘What would Seacole do?

Description

Florence Nightingale was not the only woman to have found herself in the Crimean War. Nurses, nuns, wives and even sightseers all made their presence felt. Mary Seacole is a woman who was much loved and lauded in her time as an astute businesswoman and consummate healer. A doctress, not a nurse, she was the daughter of a Scottish father and Jamaican mother and gained a reputation as a woman who could cure many ills, including the much-feared cholera. Setting up a business in the Crimea known as the British Hotel and venturing onto the battlefield to find and aid wounded soldiers, she was much loved and became known as ‘Mother Seacole’.  Unjustly forgotten in the years following her death, her legacy is once again being celebrated. A truly remarkable woman.
