Visitor Engagement Volunteer

1 or 2 4-hour shifts per week (min 3 months)

We are recruiting volunteers to help bring our collection to life and tell the story of Florence Nightingale. Volunteers will support staff to play a vital role in the daily running of the Museum. They will help to engage diverse audiences and provide our visitors with an excellent visitor experience. A regular pattern of working days is preferred with some degree of flexibility negotiable. These shifts will be in the afternoon (13.00-17.00) on weekdays and morning (10:00-14:00) or afternoon (13:00-17:00) on weekends. You will be expected to undertake some basic object handling and tour training and attend further training facilitated by the museum if required.

Main Activities:

  • Assist the Visitor Experience team by facilitating short 15 min introduction tours to visitors
  • Facilitate object handling sessions with visitors
  • Meet and greet visitors
  • Help the museum gain an insight of its audience by encouraging visitors to take part in visitor surveys and recording visitor engagement data
  • Assist the retail team in promoting the museum guide book to visitors
  • Assist the retail and admission team at operating the welcome desk and till to cover lunch breaks
  • Assist the learning team in setting up and clearing away school sessions
  • Support the learning team with the preparation and facilitation of holiday activities for families
  • Occasionally usher at evening events and represent the museum at outreach events off-site
  • Carrying out other visitor engagement activities as required on the day (training or briefing will be provided where necessary)
  • Contributing to the upkeep and visual appearance of the museum by keeping it clean and tidy for our visitors

Learning Volunteer

1 or 2 4-hour shifts per week (min 3 months)

We are looking for volunteers to help support our Learning Programme to ensure that our schools and families have the best possible experience during their visit to the museum. We are seeking help from volunteers who are passionate about museum and heritage education and keen to gain hands-on experience in a museum learning environment. A regular pattern of working days is preferred with some degree of flexibility negotiable. These shifts will be on weekday mornings (10.00-14.00). Shifts in school holidays may vary.

Main Activities:

• Assist the learning team in setting up and packing down school sessions
• Help the actor-explainer with greeting school groups and crowd control on gallery
• Explain the workshop activities to teachers and pupils and support the group’s engagement with the museum
• Support the learning team with the facilitation of holiday activities for families
• Help with preparation, set up and pack down of family activities
• Assist with the evaluation and marketing of the learning programme as required
• Help the museum gain an insight of its audience by encouraging visitors to take part in visitor surveys and by recording visitor engagement figures
• Contributing to the upkeep and visual appearance of the museum by keeping it clean and tidy for our visitors
• Other museum engagement activities may be required when there are no schools in the museum.

Youth Engagement Volunteer

1-2 4-times per month, preferably on weekends (min 3 months)

We are recruiting youth engagement volunteers as part of an international research project working with young people. Applications are invited from anyone aged 14-19 who has an interest in history, museums and heritage and/or supporting the Lambeth and Southwark communities and would like to gain skills in visitor engagement and museum education work.

We hope to bring our youth engagement volunteers together to meet each other and will hold meetings every 2nd and 4th Sunday of the month between 12:00-15:00. Scheduled events will usually take place between these times, although there may occasionally be planned events outside of these times.

Main Activities:

• Co-create and deliver talks and tours to museum visitors
• Run object-handling stations for visitors
• Organise and run events for other young people
• Participate in outreach initiatives within our local community
• Help with marketing and promoting events for young people
• Share ideas and discuss current issues
• Learn about working in a museum
• Gain CV- boosting experience and new practical skills
• Learn about Florence Nightingale, her legacy and the history of nursing
